Tam Bodkin Bryk
I am a native of western New York State. I have traveled throughout the United States, Canada and Europe and lived in New York, Atlanta and San Francisco before moving to Iowa City in 1990.

I began oil painting at the age of nine and it has been my passion ever since. I prefer to concentrate primarily on Classical Still-Life but I also frequently paint in the trompe l'oeil style. Trompe l'oeil is a French term which literally means "trick the eye”. This style of painting gives the appearance of three-dimensional or photographic realism. In each painting I carefully select my "subjects" so they play off one another in the attempt to engage and entertain the onlooker.

In this era of instant digital imagery realistic art produced using traditional methodology is very compelling to me. I prefer the slow process of completing my paintings using centuries old techniques. Painting in this way is my attempt to seek a connection to artists throughout the ages. I have found the process of using time-honored techniques, traditional materials and long established methods to be inspiring and fulfilling.

Thank you for your interest in my work.

Tam lives and works in her studio in Iowa City, Iowa.
