Lorelei Stumbo was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1960 and grew up throughout the Midwest. She moved to Iowa City from Cedar Bluff, Iowa in 1978 to attend the University as an undergraduate. She now lives in Iowa City with her husband, Guy, and son, Abram. Her interests include gardening, dancing, sculpting and camping.

Lorelei’s art mediums ranges from stone and cement; to burnt wood; to oil paint; to found objects.
“When I started delving into found objects art, I did not intend to create a lasting piece. I simply picked up interesting shapes and textures and put them together in my idle moments. Much like other people might watch TV to relax, I played with trash. Soon I was creating my own trash by burning wood. I began to decorate my own home and clothing with these pieces. I would give these art objects to friends who expressed an interest and sold a few, but it was not until beads caught my attention that I began creating items expressly for other people. I tried for utilitarian items like wine charms and gave them as gifts. As I experimented with the wire that I used for these wine charms I found I could create figures. Combining my desire to capture an individual’s spirit in these dolls and that the dolls were initially designed as wine charms (wine being an alcoholic spirit) I refer to them as “Spirit Dolls”. I am now looking into the traditional beliefs of the healing and spiritual power of stones. When I can find appropriately spiritual stone beads, I try to include them into my creations. Recently I incorporated found objects (and once the threads of a recipient’s childhood blanket). I enjoy creating personalized dolls and hope to have the opportunity to do more of that commission work soon.”
