 |
The Moving Crew is an amorphous art collective working on enlivening and enlarging the public sphere. Not quite circus, not quite theater, not quite performance, not quite gallery art, not run-of-the-mill, The Moving Crew audaciously thinks of themselves as cultural animators hoping to engage the public in fun interactive art activities that surround ideas of community, movement and "transfer-mation". Examining both humorous and serious issues on local and global scales, The Moving Crew playfully filters them through a sensibility of profound absurdity. The Moving Crew invites the public [side x side] to look at things from unusual vantage points and to join the fun and play of making things. Through the use of inexpensive or found objects and materials, The Moving Crew hopes to invite people into a new space where the normal rules of the world do not apply and where the public is encouraged to collaborate.

"Forepart"
By Patricija Brekte
Serigraph, 40" x 40" [2004]

Arts Iowa City opens their new gallery with this exhibition featuring over 40 works by 17 artists from Latvia, a Baltic country that regained independence with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The exhibition includes works by Ilze Abika, Sandra Leimane, Inese Kaze, Flera Fedjukova, Liga Kitchen, Patricija Brekte, Toms Kokins, Olga Zhuravlova, Andrey Maevsky, Liva Ulmane, Uvis Leskavnieks, Egils Dancis, Janis Zarans, Pauls Grants, Uldis Kasemirs, Linda Rulle, & Evija Gruzna.
The works in the exhibit represent the wide range of media and approaches of contemporary art in Latvia, from traditional to digital and representational to conceptual. The artists are affiliated with the Art Academy of Latvia, Latvia University, and the Artists' Union of Latvia.
University of Iowa Adjunct Associate Professor, R.H. Butler curated the exhibit and says the show "reflects the contemporary freedom of expression and liveliness that has come with independence" in that nation.
"We think this is a special exhibition highlighting the current energy and optimism in Latvia as well as the challenges for artists to flourish without state-sponsorship. Participating artists embraced the opportunity to share their work in this exhibition. While many have exhibited throughout Europe, this is their first experience presenting in the United States," Butler said.
Butler met and worked with the artists during the Winter & Spring of 2005 as a visiting artist at the Academy of Art and teaching as a visiting lecturer at Latvia University in the capital of Riga.

"Graphic Works by Emerging Croatian Artists"
October 7 through 31.
Arts Iowa City features an exhibition of young and contemporary Croatian artist-printmakers primarily trained in the art academies of Rijeka and Zagreb, Croatia. In most of these artists’ works a strong graphic quality is present, including an emphasis on contrasts and subtle relations between abstract signs and abstract space. A certain introspective character is evident in them; a quality that carefully measures how One relates to the Other, in both visual and abstract terms. The artists inevitably speak of contextual idiosyncrasies, which the Iowa City public has a chance to view and examine during this exhibition.
The exhibition will be on display during Gallery Walk opening night, 5 to 8 pm, Friday, October 7th.
Hours: Saturdays, 1:00-4:00PM

"SPACE THEORY PHYSICS, ART, DESIGN, and SOUND"
April 16 through May 16rd
Arts Iowa City at The Galleries Downtown has teamed up with the University of Iowa’s Physics and Astronomy Department to bring a new exhibit entitled SPACE THEORY PHYSICS, ART, DESIGN, and SOUND to The Galleries Downtown. The opening reception is April 16th, 2004, where guest speaker James Van Allen will be speaking on his response to the exhibit. The exhibit sponsored by Mark Moen and Bobby Jett will be on view at The Galleries Downtown.
The show looks at the synergy between the universe and how it influences the creation of art. The exhibit is unique because in addition to visual art, it integrates sound that brings a static painting more lifelike qualities. Dr. Donald Gurnett, who has worked on 33 or more spacecraft missions, is providing the gallery with authentic sounds that have been taken from space. Although he is not available for comments, his generous donation allows the observers to hear the audio recordings, which provide them with a sense of involvement that goes beyond the one-dimensional artwork.
The project came about under interesting circumstances. Nancy Purington, who is coordinating the exhibition with Jeremy Fadden, met him through a blip in time. She received an email to John Shaw, the architect of Englert, from Fadden’s email address. This was not meant for her but rather a result of an Englert computer virus. She responded to Fadden telling him the message was not for her and asked what space theory physics was. Out of their conversations they decided to collaborate on an effort to create this exhibit. Naomi Schedl, who has been a friend of Purington’s for many years, was asked to join the exhibit as well. As of a week ago, James Van Allen, agree to speak at the event.
Jeremy Fadden, who is a colleague of Dr. Gurnett and is available for interviews, will be providing materials that are used with data analysis. His graphics will be displayed on two computers that will remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibit. Fadden, who specializes in visualization of data says, “My hope in this project is that through the language of images, we might display some beauty of the physics of plasmas in space.”
The technological art is complimented by the creative paintings of Nancy Purington and Naomi Schedl; both are members of Arts Iowa City. The paintings are a whirlwind of colors, resembling tornado like tunnels that extend deep in to darkness. All of the ingredients of the exhibit make for an interesting and inimitable show that can only be seen at The Galleries Downtown.
