Mission
The
mission of Arts Iowa City is to make the visual arts flourish through
visual arts exhibitions and promotion, artist mentoring and networking,
and community visual arts education.
History
Arts Iowa City (AIC) is Iowa City's oldest nonprofit visual
arts organization. Otherwise known as the Iowa City/Johnson County
Arts Council, AIC was
founded in 1975. Since that time our volunteers have developed and
implemented visual arts exhibitions, artist services, and community
art programs.
Community
Served
AIC
provides artist members from the greater community
of Iowa City and Johnson County by providing art exhibitions, gallery events and educational
programming. All AIC events are open to the public.
AIC is providing studio space for students at the University of Iowa who have been displaced by the flood of 2008. A series of BFA and MFA shows have been held in the AIC "Underground Gallery" and they will continue for the rest of 2009 and into 2010.
Past
Programs
Exhibiting members' work has been the main focus of AIC throughout
its history. Over the years AIC has maintained a gallery in Downtown Iowa City, and
implemented a satellite gallery program in collaboration with local
businesse in the Iowa City
area.
Additionally,
AIC has created, fostered and implemented a wide variety of arts
programs. Outdoor mural projects, sculpture festivals, outdoor public
sculpture purchases, poetry readings, poetry magazine publications, art fairs, artist surveys, art classes and juried
national art exhibitions are examples
of AIC's programming breadth.
